Bij aanvang van de oorlog had hij zich als communist aangesloten bij een verzetsgroep die zich bezig hield met de bestrijding van het fascisme. Hij werd gearresteerd op 27 augustus 1941 en bracht de winter door in de gevangenis van Scheveningen. Vervolgens werd hij in het voorjaar van 1942 op transport gesteld naar Amersfoort en na een week overgebracht naar kamp Buchenwald.</p><p>Zijn verblijf in Buchenwald is hij redelijk goed doorgekomen en hij heeft geen noemenswaardige vervelende dingen meegemaakt. Zijn tactiek bestond uit zich aanpassen en er voor zorgen dat hij niet opviel. Van nature legde hij gemakkelijk contact met anderen. Verder heeft veel te danken gehad aan de hulp van zijn goede vriend Nico Wijnen. In 1944 werd hij als Nacht-und-Nebel-gevangene overgebracht naar Natzweiler.</p><p>Na zijn bevrijding is hij teruggegaan naar Nederland, waar hij de ontvangst als koel ervoer.
