Geïnterviewde is de tweede zoon van een Amerikaanse soldaat en een bakkersdochter uit Maastricht. Na de oorlog vertrok de moeder van de geïnterviewde op een schip vol oorlogsbruiden naar de VS, waar ze het niet lang uithield. Ze ging terug. Haar man reisde haar achterna en vond werk op de Amerikaanse begraafplaats in Margraten, die op dat moment werd heringericht. Er werden voor die tijd zeer moderne woningen op de begraafplaats gebouwd voor de superintendent en de assistent superintendant. Geïnterviewde heeft tot zijn vierde levensjaar op de begraafplaats gewoond.
