Zijn vader begon als timmerman, maar ging al snel de handel in en dreef uiteindelijk een kruidenierswinkel. Alberts bezocht de School met de Bijbel en ging daarna naar de Kweekschool aan de Maliebaan in Utrecht, waar hij de NSB-ers bij het hoofdkwartier zag.</p><p>Na de Duitse inval raakte Alberts betrokken bij het verzet en de hulp aan onderduikers. Het gezin Alberts, tijdens de oorlog woonachtig in Langbroek, nam een Jodin in huis. Alberts zelf hielp mee aan de onderduik van anderen. Onder invloed van een oom raakte hij onder de indruk van de gereformeerde theoloog K. Schilder, wiens preken hij tijdens de oorlog ging horen.</p><p>Na de oorlog ging Alberts mee met de Vrijmaking, ook onder invloed van C. Veenhof, die als predikant in Utrecht stond. Alberts ziet geen verband tussen de oorlog en de kerkscheuring.
