She has good memories of her father, mother, brothers and sister, and of life before the war.<br>Before the German occupation, anti-Semitism seemed absent in her hometown; contacts between the family and their Polish neighbours and friends were good.<br>After the German invasion the situation for the Polish Jews worsened dramatically. The family was put to work and later transferred to a ghetto. Later still, they had to move to a camp, and from there on 20 December 1942 Regina and her family were sent to Sobibor on a horse-drawn cart.</p><p>That very day all other family members were killed. Regina survived Sobibor and managed to escape during the revolt. Miraculously, she ended up in Germany, where she applied for voluntary work. She survived the war by pretending to be a Polish catholic girl. She met her future husband once during the summer of 1944, only to see him again in a refugee camp after the war. They married on Christmas Eve, 1945. In February 1947 their first son was born, Andrew. The family emigrated to Australia in 1949 and their daughter Marie was born there in 1958.</p><p>\n--- Description in Dutch ---<br>Regina Zielinski is op 2 november 1925 geboren in Siedliczcze (Polen).  Ze bewaart goede herinneringen aan haar vader, moeder, broers en zus en haar leven voor de oorlog. Voor de Duitse bezetting is er in haar woonplaats niets te bespeuren van enig antisemitisme; het gezin heeft goed contact met Poolse buren en vrienden. Met de komst van de Duitsers wordt de situatie snel slechter voor de Poolse joden. Het gezin wordt tewerkgesteld, en later in een ghetto ondergebracht. Nog weer later verdwijnen ze naar een kamp, vanwaar Regina en haar familie - gezeten op een kar die wordt voortgetrokken door een paard - op 20 december 1942 naar Sobibor wordt gestuurd.</p><p>Nog dezelfde dag wordt de rest van haar gezin vermoord. Regina overleeft Sobibor en weet te vluchten tijdens de opstand. Op wonderlijke wijze komt ze in Duitsland terecht waar ze zich aanmeldt voor vrijwilligerswerk. De rest van de oorlog overleeft ze door zich voor te doen als een Pools katholiek meisje. Haar aanstaande echtgenoot ontmoet zij eenmalig in de zomer van 1944 om hem na de oorlog in een vluchtelingenkamp terug te zien. Ze trouwen op kerstavond 1945. In februari 1947 krijgen ze hun eerste kind, zoon Andrew.
