Hij vertelt over de plantage en over zijn jeugd. Na zijn hbs-tijd moest hij in militaire dienst en verbleef hij tijdens de oorlog als krijgsgevangene in diverse kampen, onder andere in Japan. Na de bevrijding verliet de geïnterviewde uiteindelijk het militaire kamp dat werd opgezet en ging hij naar Nederland waar hij zijn opleiding vervolgde. De geïnterviewde ging vrij snel weer naar Indie om daar op een onderneming te werken. De geïnterviewde gaat in op de veranderingen in het werk na 1949 met name vanwege het ontstaan van de vakbonden.</p><p>De echtgenote van de geïnterviewde is ook geïnterviewd voor het SMGI-project. Men koos ervoor om geen onderzoeksproject op te zetten, maar om zich te concentreren op het verzamelen van de verhalen van mensen vanuit archiveringsoogpunt als basis voor toekomstig onderzoek.
