Zijn vader overlijdt voor zijn geboorte en zijn moeder hertrouwt met de zoon van de Groningse opperrabbijn als David zeven jaar is. Het liberaal-Joodse gezin dat in de buurt van het Concertgebouw woont, verhuist naar Amsterdam-Oost. Omdat hun stiefvader conservatief Joods is, verandert er in dat opzicht ook veel voor de kinderen.</p><p>Bij de grote Amsterdamse razzia van 20 juni 1943 komen Davids ouders op het idee David te laten wandelen met de hond om zo de razzia te ontlopen. Hoewel het wemelt van de politie weet David vrienden van zijn stiefvader elders in Amsterdam te bereiken. Gedurende de rest van de oorlog duikt hij onder bij twee Friese gezinnen. Davids moeder, pleegvader en zus worden bij de razzia opgepakt en vermoord in Sobibor. Na de oorlog wordt David opgenomen door een Duits-Joods gezin. Eind jaren vijftig ontmoet hij zijn vrouw Liesbeth.
