Hij is de 17e juli als misdienaar in de Ritakerk aanwezig bij de feestelijke viering van het 25-jarig bestaan van de parochie. Hij beschrijft uitgebreid de kerk en de normale gang van zaken bij vieringen. Na het bombardement rent hij naar huis. De ouderlijke woning is getroffen, maar geen van zijn familieleden zijn gewond geraakt. Hitlerjugend wordt ingezet om eerste hulp te bieden, mede nuttig voor de propagandamachine. De ravage is enorm in de Van der Pekbuurt. Er is brand en her en der liggen verminkte lichamen. Het gezin verhuist tijdelijk naar een woning elders in Amsterdam, die leegstaat omdat de Joodse bewoners zijn weggevoerd. Zijn vader wordt opgepakt wegens hulp aan deserterende Duitse officieren, maar weet tijdens een transport vanuit Kamp Vught door bluf te ontkomen. Zijn vader weet de boot van de scheepvaartinspectie weer aan de Duitsers te ontfutselen en zo kan het gezin in ruil voor brandstof bij de boeren aan eten komen.
