The Bialowitz family was observant. Simcha attend the Polish school, which had a few Jewish teachers. In the morning he would be in school, in the afternoon he would work in the local pharmacy and drugstore. When the Germans invaded, Izbica changed into a transitory ghetto. His father was murdered in the graveyard of Izbica, his mother and sisters were gassed in Sobibor.</p><p>Simcha saw his mother and his two sisters when they arrived in the extermination camp. His sister tried to hand over a parcel, but Simcha refused to take it. He survived Sobibor together with his younger brother, Philip (whose interview is also on this website). During the interview Simcha discusses his stay in Sobibor in great detail. He recalls how Demjanjuk once stood up for him in the camp. His recollections are fragmented. After the war he married with Leah and together they emigrated to Israel.</p><p>The final part of this interview consists of a conversation with Leah Bialowitz. Although this is outside the scope of the project, the transcript has been uploaded in this dataset under file name stiso_20100210_Bialowitz_Lea</p><p>--- Description in Dutch ---<br>Simcha Bialowitz (1912) is opgegroeid in de sjtetl Izbica, een kleine Joodse gemeenschap in het oosten van Polen. Het gezin Bialowitz is religieus. Simcha bezoekt de Poolse school waar enkele Joodse leerkrachten les geven. ’s Morgens gaat hij naar school en ’s middags werkt hij in de plaatselijke apotheek en drogist.</p><p>Met de komst van de Duitsers verandert Izbica in een doorgangsgetto. Zijn vader wordt vermoord op de begraafplaats in Izbica, zijn moeder en zussen worden vergast in Sobibor. Simcha ziet zijn moeder en twee zussen bij hun aankomst in het vernietigingskamp. Zijn zus probeert hem nog een pakketje aan te reiken, maar Simcha neemt dit niet aan. Hij overleeft Sobibor samen met zijn jongere broer Philip (zie zijn interview elders op deze site).</p><p>In het interview gaat Simcha uitgebreid in op zijn verblijf in Sobibor. Hij vertelt hoe Demjanjuk in het kamp voor hem opkomt. Zijn herinneringen zijn fragmentarisch. Na de oorlog trouwt hij met Leah en samen emigreren ze in 1949 naar Israël.</p><p>Het laatste deel van dit interview bevat een gesprek met echtgenote Leah Bialowitz.
