Ze werd geboren in een gereformeerd gezin in Drachten, maar verhuisde na korte tijd naar Amersfoort waar haar vader meubelverkoper was. Na de Duitse inval werd het hele gezin geëvacueerd naar het Noord-Hollandse Bergen. De ouders speelden geen rol van betekenis in de oorlog. Ze ging als kind op catechisatie bij ds. S.J. Popma.</p><p>In 1944 verzette een aantal gereformeerden onder leiding van de Kamper hoogleraar theologie Klaas Schilder zich tegen besluiten van de gereformeerde synode en maakte zich ‘vrij’. Ds. Popma bleef de synode trouw, maar het gezin Schep ging mee met de Vrijmaking, die in Amersfoort pas na de oorlog tot stand kwam.</p><p>Mevrouw Schep volgde haar ouders, maar beschouwt de Vrijmaking terugblikkend als noodzaak, omdat niet getornd mocht worden aan de gereformeerde voorschriften over de kinderdoop.
