Bij de Japanse aanval op Ambon werkt geïnterviewde samen met anderen aan een huis in het bos. Ze zijn erg bang voor de vliegtuigen en bombardementen. Zij blijven zich verder schuilhouden in de bossen. ’s Avonds wordt er geen lamp ontstoken uit angst om ontdekt te worden. Er worden drie Japanse militairen gelegerd in Hila, ondersteund door een politieagent, iemand uit Hila.</p><p>Geïnterviewde herinnert zich van de Tweede Wereldoorlog dat zijn vader in zijn bijzijn vreselijk afgeranseld werd. Aanvankelijk wil zijn vader de klappen afweren, maar dat werkt alleen averechts. De mensen uit Hila moeten zorgen voor het verbouwen van voedsel voor de Japanners. Als een opdracht niet goed of direct werd uitgevoerd dan krijgt men slaag. De politieman staat bekend als een wreed man. Hij ziet er op toe dat de opdrachten worden uitgevoerd.<br><br>Tijdens de oorlog stort een geallieerd vliegtuig neer in de buurt van Hila. Drie Australische bemanningsleden overleven het en worden geholpen aan een schuilplaats door mensen uit Hila. Zij worden echter ontdekt, opgepakt en naar Ambon overgebracht.</p><p>Na de Japanse capitulatie wordt er door mensen uit Hila geen wraak genomen op de politieman die voor de Japanners heeft gewerkt.
