Zijn vader, ex-zeeman, woonde er al. Eerst gingen ze inwonen in het pension van zijn oom aan de Beukelsdijk. Later kocht zijn vader een huis in de Harddraverstraat in Noord en op zijn 17e verhuisde het gezin naar Blijdorp. Zijn ouders waren actief in de Kaapverdische gemeenschap. Kaapverdië was nog een kolonie van Portugal en zijn ouders en ooms zaten in het verzet. Bij hen thuis kwamen altijd mensen om te praten over onafhankelijkheid. De politiek ingaan, opkomen voor de zwakkeren, kreeg hij zo van huis uit mee. In 1994 richtte hij Cabo op, een Kaapverdische jongerenorganisatie. In dezelfde periode werd hij actief voor de PvdA. Hij werd bestuurder in Delfshaven en is nu gemeenteraadslid.</p><p>Dit interview maakt onderdeel uit van het project Ziel van de Wederopbouw, wat in 2016 is ondernomen door Stichting Verhalenhuis Belvédère.
