SIM2020 is uitgevoerd onder personen met een Turkse, Marokkaanse, Surinaamse, Poolse, Iraanse, Somalische achtergrond, een achtergrond in het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk (Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba) en personen zonder migratieachtergrond. Bij SIM2006 en SIM2010/2011 bestond de doelpopulatie uit Turkse, Marokkaanse, Antilliaanse en Surinaamse Nederlanders; bij SIM2015 zijn daar Poolse en Somalische Nederlanders aan toegevoegd.</p><p>Het doel van SIM2020 is om de positie van de genoemde groepen in Nederland in kaart te brengen en, door aan te sluiten op eerder survey onderzoek, de integratie van deze groepen door de tijd heen volgen. Aan deze groepen en aan een vergelijkingsgroep van autochtone Nederlanders zijn vragen gesteld over onder meer onderwijs, arbeid, sociale contacten, culturele integratie, godsdienst, beeldvorming en gezondheid en sport.</p><p>De onderzoeksopzet is ingrijpend gewijzigd. Het CAWI-veldwerk is volgens planning in maart 2020 gestart, maar vanwege de uitbraak van de coronapandemie en de aankondiging van de eerste lockdown en bijbehorende maatregelen kon begin april niet met het CAPI-veldwerk worden begonnen. Het CAPI-veldwerk heeft daardoor in de periode september-december 2020 plaatsgevonden. Het CAWI-veldwerk is januari 2021 afgesloten.</p><p>Van SIM2020 is, in samenspraak met het CBS, een CCF databestand (Controlled Circulation File) opgesteld. Dit is een geanonimiseerd bestand. Uit het oorspronkelijke databestand zijn variabelen verwijderd of ingedikt.
