Hij spioneerde onder andere in de haven van Vlaardingen. De verzamelde gegevens gaf hij door aan hoger geplaatsten die ervoor zorgden dat ze in Engelse handen kwamen.</p><p>Vanaf juni 1940 was hij lid van het Geuzenverzet. Nadat de eerste groep Geuzen was gearresteerd, continueerde hij met een twintigtal overgebleven Geuzen de verzetsactiviteiten. Ze sloten zich aan bij de Ordedienst en Nederland voor Oranje. Op een gegeven moment werden ze verraden. Van der Harst werd op 19 augustus 1942 gearresteerd en overgebracht naar de gevangenis in Scheveningen. Hij werd er verhoord en in januari 1943 naar Utrecht gebracht. Daar werd hij met acht anderen ter dood veroordeeld. Door tussenkomst van de zoon van een predikant uit Maassluis werd het vonnis uitgesteld en werden ze afgevoerd naar Anrath in Duitsland.</p><p>Van der Harst kwam in maart 1945 in Buchenwald terecht. Toen de geallieerde troepen naderden, werd hij op transport gesteld naar Tsjecho-Slowakije. Toen daar de Russen naderden, moesten de gevangenen op dodenmars. Van der Harst kwam in Flossenbürg terecht en werd ook daar geselecteerd voor een dodenmars richting Dachau. Deze mars werd door Amerikanen bij Wetterfeld gestopt en de gevangenen werden bevrijd. Door het eten van een kip kreeg Van der Harst dysenterie.
