Van Niervaert of Niervaart publiceerde omstreeks 1600 Onderwys in de Letter-konst; dit werkje is verloren gegaan. Een herdruk verscheen in 1669 in Dordrecht onder de titel Oprechte onderwijs van de letter-konst (Oprecht onderwijs in de spelling). Daarna verschenen er tot eind achttiende eeuw nog vele drukken. Van Niervaert was schoolmeester, waarschijnlijk in Holland, en dichtte enkele bekende geuzenliederen. Hij streed als kanonnier in het leger van prins Maurits. Veel meer is niet over hem bekend. Gezien zijn naam zal hij uit het Noord-Brabantse Niervaart afkomstig zijn. Ondanks de titel speelt de spelling in dit boek een zeer ondergeschikte rol.
